Gustavo Kuerten needed to come up with a performance of a lifetime to clinch year-end No. 1, and recalled the dramatic finish to the 2000 season on his special appearance on Holding Court Live, Monday at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
The charismatic Brazilian had needed a perfect week at the season finale in Lisbon – as well as some help from his competitors – in order to overtake Marat Safin at the top of the Emirates ATP Rankings.
“The best performance I had on the tennis court was that day ,” he said, recounting his victory over Andre Agassi in the final. “I played perfectly, closing the gaps against one of my idols when I was a child. I had an easy draw, Sampras in the semi-finals and Agassi,” he added with a laugh.
